Kailash Mansarovar Parikrma - [ॐ नमः शिवाय] - Aug’24

A Sacred Journey to the Abode of Lord Shiva

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is more than a pilgrimage—it is a profound spiritual journey that blends devotion, endurance, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. In August 2024, 39 pilgrims embarked on this soul-enriching expedition through the Kerung border into Tibet, China, beginning their journey in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The pilgrimage started with divine blessings at the Pashupatinath Temple, where the group participated in a sacred Rudrabhishek ceremony seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva for a safe and successful journey.

With hearts full of devotion and excitement, the pilgrims began their journey toward the majestic Himalayas, preparing themselves for an unforgettable spiritual experience.

Through Kerung and the High Himalayan Roads

The journey from Kathmandu to the Nepal–China border at Timure was filled with winding mountain roads, cascading waterfalls, and scenic Himalayan valleys.

After crossing the border on foot into Tibet, the group reached Kerung, their first destination in China. This crossing itself was an unforgettable experience—one that symbolized stepping into a new world of ancient spirituality and breathtaking landscapes.

From Kerung, the pilgrims continued their journey toward Saga, crossing a high mountain pass at 5,236 meters (17,178 feet). At this altitude, the air becomes thinner and the body must slowly adjust.

At Saga (~4,400 meters), the group experienced the realities of high altitude and learned the importance of patience, rest, and moving forward one step at a time.

Sacred Moments at Lake Mansarovar

After acclimatizing in Saga, the pilgrims finally reached Darchen (4,575 meters)—the gateway to the sacred Mount Kailash.

But before beginning the Parikrama, the group visited the divine and serene Lake Mansarovar, one of the holiest lakes in the world.

Surrounded by glacier-covered mountains and endless Tibetan skies, the lake offered moments of deep reflection and spiritual peace.

Here, the group performed Rudrabhishek and Havan rituals, seeking blessings from Lord Shiva. Some pilgrims even woke up before sunrise to witness the magical sight of the full moon reflecting over the sacred waters of Mansarovar.

During this time, many witnessed a rare phenomenon known as “Shiv Dhanush”, a rainbow forming across the sky after thin clouds—a moment that felt nothing short of divine.

The Sacred Parikrama Around Mount Kailash

The most awaited part of the journey began at Yam Dwar, the symbolic gateway to the spiritual path around Mount Kailash.

The three-day Kailash Parikrama is a physically demanding trek covering approximately 34 kilometers around the sacred mountain.

The first day took the pilgrims to Diraphuk (4,890 meters), offering breathtaking views of the north face of Mount Kailash.

The second day was the most challenging, as the group crossed the legendary Dolma La Pass (around 5,600 meters / 18,400 feet). This steep and demanding climb tests both physical endurance and mental strength.

Along the way, pilgrims passed the sacred Gauri Kund, a place deeply associated with spiritual purification.

Despite the harsh conditions and high altitude, the journey was filled with faith, determination, and the powerful spiritual presence of Mount Kailash.

An Unforgettable Spiritual Experience

Out of the 39 pilgrims, 29 successfully completed the Kailash Parikrama, guided by faith and supported by the collective spirit of the group.

Spending nearly seven days at altitudes between 14,400 and 18,400 feet was a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience for everyone.

The return journey from Saga to Kathmandu was filled with adventure—landslides, washed-out roads, and difficult travel conditions tested the resilience of the group.

Yet through every challenge, the blessings of Lord Shiva and the rugged beauty of the Tibetan plateau made the journey unforgettable.

Upon returning to Kathmandu, the pilgrims once again visited the Pashupatinath Temple, offering prayers of gratitude for the successful completion of their sacred journey.
